Welcome to the Gluten Free Path

Hi, my name is Missy. This is my husband Rick. We eat gluten free, just started in February of this year, 2009. I’m proud to say I love it! Even though we eat Gluten Free, we’re not willing to eat tasteless, bland food. In fact, we eat more varied than we ever did before going gluten free.
Why, you ask, did we go gluten free? Well, it was an experiment that stuck. Rick has been “sick” since just before we met. Since end of summer 2004. That’s a long time. Half of Rick’s 20’s were spent feeling horrible. He has some autoimmune problems that along with other things, living gluten free seems to have given him his life back. Given our life together back, because in the beginning it wasn’t much at all. He didn’t used to do much other than work, watch football, play computer games and sleep. Now he wants to go places, hang out with friends and travel! My dream guy is finally alive again!
Rick has not been diagnosed with celiac disease, which is the most common why people go gluten free. When he was tested he hadn’t been eating gluten, because each time he did he felt ill, so he didn’t test positive. Being stubborn like he is, he refused to eat it and bug the doctor for another test. The doctor was more concerned with his UC (ulcerative colitis) running out of control so he didn’t focus on the “gluten possibility”. That’s okay, for now, we are both okay with our own pioneering beyond gluten.

We want the Gluten Free Path to help you. If you have been sick for a long time and were just diagnosed, or think you may have a problem and have not been diagnosed. Or if you just want to live a healthier, albeit, more complicated life; I want this to be a welcoming place for you to visit.
When Rick got sick more than five years ago, I felt so alone. We didn’t know anything about digestive things. Other than what goes in comes out eventually, if it can’t be used by the body. We knew few people with digestive problems. Unfortunately, some doctors are less than helpful and supportive, so it can be a lonely road to learn new things. I don’t want you to feel alone. So think of the Gluten Free Path as a community of pioneers beyond gluten. When you have questions, please ask. I don’t know everything, but I know where to look, and sometimes it’s nice to have someone else point you in the right direction, or any direction. Please feel free to kick off your shoes, read, eventually chat, and ask all about gluten free. We’re all friends here.

I ask you to send us your gluten free stories. How did you figure out this was the thing for you? How long did it take you to get here? Share your sorrows and joys. Here is a place were you will find respect and understanding.

We also hope to be a resource for all things gluten free and a few things that are just health related. We are both interested in living a more healthy life. Health is so broad reaching, it’s not just about to gluten or not to gluten, it’s about so much more. We all know someone whom has health problems and many of the common ones are avoidable, we just have to educate ourselves. Educating is the best way to ensure a gluten free lifestyle will stick and become not just a diet but a life path. Everyone should be able to feel better and have a better quality of life.
