Gluten Free Tips
The Gluten Free tips you will find here are based on our experiences. We’re not doctors… in fact, most doctors aren’t aware of these things, so I guess it’s good that we aren’t. My point is, you should never take another person’s word as fact without performing your own due diligence. In short, look them up for yourself.
Farmed Salmon is not Gluten Free
I found this one out the hard way. After eating a simple dinner of Salmon and potatoes, I started to feel… like I had just eaten gluten. Thinking this was very odd, my wife and I hit the internet in search of an answer. Low and behold, Farmed Salmon (which is what we happened to be eating that night) are sometimes fed a wheat based food (more commonly it is corn based, but this isn’t reported on the packaging). This, and the fact that they are dyed (for color) with a wheat based coloring, makes them NOT gluten free.
You may be thinking, “did he just say they are dyed?” Yes, I did say that. Something in the way that Farmed Salmon are ‘farmed’ keeps them from becoming their natural color. Instead, they become a grayish, unappetizing color. The industry responded by dying the meat (with a wheat based food coloring).
